Making www.Eurostar.com more accessible to people in northern England could be good for the environment, according to a politician.

Liberal Democrat county councillor Rod Fletcher stated that extending the reach of the Channel Tunnel would lead to more people choosing to travel abroad by rail instead of by air. He has suggested that a high-speed service between the north-west and London should be introduced in order to make the Eurostar network more accessible to those who do not live near the capital.

In addition, he has proposed diverting some West Coast Mainline trains to the station at St Pancras instead of London Euston, as this operates direct routes to the continent. Councillor Fletcher said: "At a time when everyone is under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, some train services from the north-west must be integrated with Eurostar services to and from St Pancras to help combat cheap, low-cost airline services."
